Curriculum Vitae

Prof. Dr. jur. Xujun Gao is Director of the German and EU Law Center at Tongji University Law School, Shanghai since 2003. Also since 2003, he holds the ThyssenKrupp AG Foundation Chair for Private Economic Law at the Chinese-German College for Postgraduate Studies (CDHK). After graduating in English at Suzhou University and in International Economic Law at Nankai University’s School of Economics, he obtained a doctorate degree in German Commercial Law at the Law Faculty of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. He recently held a Humboldt research scholarship at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and the University of Cambridge, England.

Professor Gao further engages in translating activities, recently including a translation of “The Sociology of Law: An introduction“ by Thomas Raiser (Shanghai People’s Press 2011).

Prof. Dr. jur. Xujun Gao was Fellow at the Käte Hamburger Center for Advanced Study in the Humanities “Law as Culture” from July to December 2012 and from August to September 2013.

Research Project

The role of German influence on the transformation of the modern Chinese legal system

The Chinese legal system of the late Qing Dynasty and of the Republic of China was greatly influenced by German Law. In 1978, China began to open its doors to other countries and to reform its economic system. At the same time, China tried to build a modern legal system. Since then, almost 40 years have passed. Does a modern legal system exist in China today? Is this legal system still strongly impacted by German law? What does it look like in reality? With this research project, I will try to find an answer to such questions by concentrating my research on the fields of company law, social security law, labour contract law and IP-law.
